HandyTrac Case Study

Opportunity

HandyTrac provides key control for Apartments, Student & Military Housing. HandyTrac protects over 3 million units across over 800 companies. As one might imagine, the user community of their systems is huge: property managers, rental agents, maintenance and more. The company had reached a point to where its proprietary systems needed a refresh in terms of its user experience design, core processes, and infrastructure.

Approach

We facilitated requirements elicitation and visualization workshops with the subject matter experts from HandyTrac. This included dedicated workshops with the company’s business development, operations, customer service and assembly departments. This cross-section of stakeholders allowed us to not only discuss the user experience design of the system, but the overall customer journey. By rapidly prototyping the experience using Axure, every stakeholder had the opportunity to click through a very realistic depiction of the future system. We finished the process by documenting User Stories with Acceptance Criteria in a comprehensive product backlog for the new system.

Outcomes

A nominal investment in prototyping yielded excellent results when it was time for the development team to build the new HandyTrac platform. By referencing Axure pages, traced to each User Story, the developers had minimal questions about the requirements and intent of the system. This helped mitigate the risk of costly rework due to missed or misunderstood requirements.
